Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group’s full-spectrum Special Missions modification and operational services provide customers with well-managed, confidential and low-risk solutions.
Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group is one of the most experienced aircraft modification companies in the world. With our 90-plus-year aerospace pedigree, we have worked on more than 30 platforms – including Concorde, C-130, Boeing P-8, Tristar, VC-10, Airbus 318 and Global Express – which makes us an extremely experienced Special Missions partner.
Our services range from standard role conversion, such as Medevac, all the way through to highly classified intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance programmes. Moreover, our services are ‘full-spectrum’, taking in brokerage (for new or previously-owned aircraft), design, manufacture, installation, ground and flight test, certification and operational support. For instance, we are supporting 12 of the world’s air forces in relation to the C-130 platform alone. Support can also include maintenance and obsolescence management, training, crewing and flight operations. In addition, we consider ourselves platform-independent, in that there are few if any airframes on which we could not work.
A prime example of our work is the Quick Change (QC) conversion, from commercial to military configuration, of BAe 146-200s for the UK Ministry of Defence. Delivered on time and within budget, the project involved fuel tank inerting and the installation of flight deck armour and defensive aids (Large Aircraft Infra-Red Counter Measures – LAIRCM). A Successor Identification Friend or Foe (SIFF) system was also installed, along with an improved communications systems (HF and UHF radio and SATCOM). The aircraft are currently in service with RAF 32 (The Royal) Squadron.
We are also adept at making Special Missions conversions to smaller aircraft, following Marshall’s acquisition of Hawker Beechcraft Limited, Beechcraft’s flagship European MRO business, in 2013. For instance, virtually every Beechcraft King Air model has been fitted for aerial survey operations, where the modifications frequently included the fitting of digital mapping products, LIDAR and multiand hyper-spectral cameras.
We enjoy close working relationships with the major airframe OEMs, including Airbus and Bombardier, and we are a GOLD-rated supplier, under the Boeing Enterprise Supplier Tool (BEST) rating system, in relation to our work supporting the P-8 maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft.
Our team of more than 2,000 highly trained personnel has access to an exceptional range of engineering and test facilities and we have considerable experience in managing all of the aerodynamic, structural, avionic, electrical and overall performance implications that arise during Special Missions conversions.
We have over 1.3 million ft2 of hangar space on our 800 acre site, which includes our company-owned airport (capable of accepting aircraft up to Boeing 747 size). We are a List X facility, allowing us to work on UK government contracts classified as SECRET; where List X is the equivalent to ‘Facility Security Clearance’ in other countries. In addition, we have adopted ISO 27001 as our data security standard, we have a team dedicated to looking after our physical and IT assets, and our entire site is subjected to quarterly data security reviews.
In summary, our Special Missions capabilities are second-to-none. We are a trustworthy and reliable partner when it comes to embodying bespoke and often sensitive modifications to airframes.
