Fuel Tank Flammability Protection

FAA regulations introduced in 2008 mean that all new civil aircraft have suitable flammability protection systems installed in the fuel tanks. Most legacy aircraft will have to undergo modifications. This approach is also being adopted by EASA so is expected to be incorporated into the airworthiness rules of all major organisations.

While military aircraft operators are not subject to FAA regulations, there is still a duty of care towards personnel that must be adhered to. This is particularly relevant to aircraft that operate in areas where there is a threat of ground attack. Military operators usually protect all fuel tanks and aim to eliminate ignition within them.

We design, install and certify fuel tank flammability protection systems for military and civilian aircraft. Our solutions meet military (Def-Stan 00-970) and civil (FAR 25) requirements.

Our extensive experience allows us to evaluate a number of different options and advise our customers on the most effective solution.

There are two main methods of flammability protection:
• Ignition mitigation means – ignition is allowed but the effects are locally mitigated; in most instances by suppressant foam introduced to the fuel tank
• Flammability reduction means − ignition is allowed but full flammable conditions are reduced; in most cases by an inert gas introduced to the fuel tank
